ONCE THEY WERE alone in her office, Sophia pulled out a manila folder from her drawer and grabbed a pen. Her face felt warm as he stared at her from the other side of the desk. She couldn’t meet his gaze. She was too angry to look at him.
“Sophia…”
“Our contract is pretty standard,” she said, opening the folder and jotting down the wedding date. “I’m marking down that you are interested in full-service support.”
“Sophia, I feel like I need to explain,” Evan said.
That was hilarious given the fact that there was absolutely nothing he could say that would explain why he had been chatting her up for the last twenty hours like he was anything but a soon-to-be married man.
“I think what we’re going to do is both agree that yesterday we experienced a traumatic event. I was feeling very vulnerable, and it was nice to talk to someone who understood. I clearly mistook your friendliness to mean you were unattached. I have been set straight.”
Evan wrung his hands. “I still feel like I should apologize. I was flirtatious. It was…misleading.”
Misleading? Yeah, it was misleading. She tried not to let it show that her blood boiled. He clearly didn’t think he’d be outed as engaged so quickly. As bad as she felt for herself, she felt worse for Jamie Wharton. Sophia had the sinking feeling that he wasn’t marrying her for the right reasons.
