Getting taken hostage by a gang of train robbers wasn't in dime novelist Essie Vanderfair's plans, but interviewing these men could make her career soar. Especially since the gang includes legendary outlaw Tex Beckett, better known as the Texas Titan. Tex is famed for his protection of women and children, so she'll be fine…right?
Keeping the gang in line was hard enough before a stubborn, beautiful writer interfered. Now Tex is scrambling to keep Essie safe, to gather evidence against the gang and most of all to hide his dangerous secrets. First, that he's a detective working undercover. And second, that he's not the Texas Titan at all, but Tex's twin brother, Tate Beckett.
Meet Tate and Essie
Born and raised in Idaho, Tate Beckett is an identical twin. But his brown hair and blue eyes are about the only thing he shares with his brother Tex. Tate’s brother is the infamous outlaw known as the Texas Titan and Tate feels duty-bound to atone for his brother’s crimes by tracking down other outlaws in his job as a Pinkerton detective agent. When Tex’s heists go cold for a few months, Tate ceases the opportunity to pretend to be the legendary Texas Titan in order to infiltrate and bring down a group of train robbers.
Pragmatic, typically serious and naturally protective, Tate struggles with pretending to be his more charismatic brother. But Essie Vanderfair brings out his humor and his kindness as they ride together toward the gang’s hideout. Through his friendship with Essie, he also realizes that his dreams may no longer lie with being a Pinkerton detective.
Essie Vanderfair has always felt like a bit of anomaly within her large family. Cheerful, fun-loving and adventure-seeking, this blonde-haired, hazel-eyed young woman opted for a career as a dime novelist rather than settling down. She loves storytelling and she’s good at it, only not quite as good as her publisher had hoped. To glean the first-hand research she feels will make her next book a bestseller, she convinces a gang of train robbers to allow her to interview them as they travel to their hideout.
She’s initially fearless in accompanying this group of wanted men—not only has she gathered plenty of practical skills while researching for her books, but the Texas Titan is among the gang and she’s long been enamored by this kind, larger-than-life outlaw. Her biggest fear lies within herself, in not being taken seriously by those around her, including her family. But as she comes to know the Texas Titan, who’s really the outlaw’s twin brother Tate Beckett in disguise, she comes to realize she possesses great strength and her optimism and compassion are truly gifts.
