THE DANGEROUS LIFE OF BEING ON THE RUN
For quite some time, I’ve been playing with the idea of Cate Sullivan not really being Cate Sullivan. I introduced her as the realtor in the very first book, LOVE SHADOWS, in this series. She was a friend to Luke Bosworth when his wife was alive and then she helped sell his house after her death. She was empathetic and related well to his children.
Each time I put my leading ladies, Maddie, Liz, Isabelle and of course, Sarah, in their sculling boat, many times, Cate would fill in when someone couldn’t row. So, Cate began haunting me as much as three years ago.
One night I literally dreamed about her talking to me. As she looked at me, I saw that her brown eyes changed to aqua, then back to brown. I asked her, “Why, your eyes aren’t brown at all. They’re aqua---like lake water.” She nodded.
That’s when I realized she was living in disguise.
Years ago, I wrote a non-fiction book dealing with domestic abuse. On that book tour, I visited women’s shelters in the middle of forests in Pennsylvania next to the Amish country to the Colorado Mountains, cities like New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and Phoenix. The stories were all different and yet, the same. Those who got out, ran for their lives had a chance. They made a new life for themselves and their children. Many had to relinquish their names and identities. Our city, county and national governments help these women evade their stalker, sometimes murderous, husbands and boyfriends. These women live in constant fear. I was and still am, amazed and so very proud of their courage. What they have to overcome is mind-boggling. The hope they have to find through the weeds of a past life with abuse is beyond my imagination.
Daily, I pray for them and their children that they find happiness and some joy. For many, they can never come out of hiding like Cate Sullivan does in my story. They will forever live in the shadows and dark alleys of life. Always looking over their shoulders, living half lives, but they ARE alive---which is what one of them told me.
God bless all you women living this Dangerous Life.
