Winning her over means winning everything
Sophie Callahan is PI Brad Harrington’s best lead to tracking down the man he’s been hired to bring to justice: Sophie’s own thieving father. But when Brad arrives at The Pampered Pooch, just behind a litter of stray kittens, the pet-store owner is the big surprise. This scrappy, huge-hearted woman with charm to spare gets to Brad in a way no one has ever been able to before. She spends her life finding—and making—homes for others: abandoned pets, her young niece. He’ll have to tell her why he’s really here. Which means he’ll have to choose between his sail-away dreams and the chance to build a forever home—with her.
GUEST POST:
Pets That Charm Us by Cari Lynn Webb
My heroine, Sophie Callahan, owns a pet store called The Pampered Pooch in my July release, The Charm Offensive. Pet owners can find everything they need for their favorite four-legged family members from dog food to cat beds to every sort of toy. City dogs can also enjoy play dates in the Pooch’s day care. Sophie can’t refuse shelter for abandoned kittens, puppy surrenders or rescues of any kind. She makes use of her foster families and her kennels to house all of her furry friends until she finds each one a forever home.
Sophie has an inner desire to ensure a loving home for each of her friends, whether two or four-legged after a childhood spent without stability. Even as Sophie’s kennels fill, she still can’t turn away those in need.
What is it about animals that warms our insides and opens our hearts? Are there certain animals that charm us more than others? Sophie would argue the defenseless and neglected and abused need a voice and love. I’d agree. But I think it might be even more simple than that: something as simple as a glance into sweet puppy dog eyes or the soft purr from a kitten sleeping against your neck or watching any mother with its baby: a lioness playing with her cubs, a mother duck guarding her ducklings as they cross the road or a baby elephant holding onto his mother’s tail as she guides him through the rain forest.
Or maybe it’s the actions of the humans who protect animals: the police officers that built an umbrella shelter for the dove who built a nest on one of their police cars. Or the gas station owner that gave a home to the abandoned dog on his property, even making the puppy an employee badge as official greeter. Or the tireless efforts of the volunteers who rescue wildlife from deplorable conditions and give each one a new life in a sanctuary. It’s those first steps onto the grass by a timid bear who’d never left his cage or the playful run of a puppy saved from the slaughter house or an elephant’s first cautious, but curious meeting with another of its kind after years spent isolated and chained.
I’ve often told my family that if I ever won the lottery, I’d buy land and open an animal sanctuary. I want to bring home every cat waiting for a home at the pet store and adopt all the dogs at our local shelter. I can relate to Sophie’s drive to help animals. Unfortunately, I don’t have the space for so many animals so I’ll continue to support those whose efforts make a difference in animal lives around the world.
And I’ll accept that my heart will melt with every picture of newborn kittens and fluffy puppies and little owlets. Here’s a picture of my own four-legged charmer, Bailey, whose teddy bear face always makes me smile and chases away my bad moods. Now it’s your turn to tell me about your charming pets and favorite animals.
Happy Reading!
