Noemi continued to stare out the window as the plane descended, preparing to land at the private airstrip somewhere near the Ostania palace—at least that’s what Max had said when he’d told her to fasten her seat belt. Even though the sun was sinking low in the sky, she was able to make out the palace. The sight captured her full attention. This was where Max lived? Wow!
Even from this height, it looked impressive with its blue turrets and white walls. She couldn’t even imagine calling this place home. It looked like an entire village could fit within its walls and still have some extra room for visitors.
With so much space, it made her wonder why Max had felt the need to leave here for so long. What had he been running from? Was it his parents? Were they overbearing? She hoped not. Second thoughts about this trip started to niggle at her.
Nestled in the jagged snow-covered mountains, she had no idea where they were going to land. But the plane kept descending and soon a small clearing came into view with a runway. All around the cleared airstrip was snow. It certainly wasn’t large enough for a commercial jet. In fact, it seemed rather short—
The wheels touched down with a jolt. Her fingers tightened on the armrests. She closed her eyes and waited. They would stop in time. Wouldn’t they?
“Are you okay?” Max asked, drawing her from her thoughts.
As the plane rolled to a stop, she expelled a pent-up breath. “Yes. Um...why?”
“It’s just that you’ve been quiet the entire flight.”
She shrugged. “I just have a lot on my mind.”
Did he? Did he know how hard this was going to be for all of them? And what was his family going to say when they heard about the baby? But then again, they probably already heard the rumors that had been in the newspaper.
“What about your family?” she asked.
“What about them?”
“They must have heard the gossip. Are you going to confirm their suspicions that the baby is yours?”
He shook his head. “Not until you’re ready. They know after my cancer treatments that children are unlikely. They’ll easily dismiss the story as nothing but fiction.”
She hoped he was right because this pregnancy was becoming more complicated with each passing day.
