This heartwarming story is about eight-year-old Jimmy Longwood, who has fallen in love with a Golden Retriever puppy. When his parents explain that their condo does not allow pets, Jimmy is heartbroken. While skiing in Aspen the entire family is killed in an avalanche. Jimmy goes to heaven and meets an angel who decides to send Jimmy back to earth as the very Golden Retriever he’d wanted for his own and to learn the one lesson all human beings must learn…unconditional love.
EXCERPT:
There was a rustle of footsteps on the second floor. Jimmy heard voices.
“Do you think Santa has been here yet?” A woman’s voice said.
“Oh, yes, Mommy,” a weak, yet happy child’s voice replied.
“Well, come on, then,” a male voice said.
Jimmy looked up at the landing on the staircase and saw a mother, father and a child all dressed in flannel pajamas, robes and slippers descend the stairs. Behind this trio came an elegant woman dressed in an expensive red satin robe and matching satin slippers.
“I know Santa has been here, Robin and he’s brought something very special for you.”
That voice! I know that voice.
Daphne Richardson came down the stairs rather quickly, passing up the slow moving boy on the stairs. She held a camera in her hands and aimed it up the stairs. Jimmy looked at the woman in the red satin robe.
Omigosh! It’s the woman who bought Bubblehead! Is that possible? Oh, no! You mean…I’m Bubblehead?
Jimmy noticed the parents waited patiently for the child to climb down.
Robin must be very young. He’s not used to taking the stairs very easily. Brother! What a production. That’s good, kid, milk it for all you’ve got.
Jimmy noticed that the boy looked to be about eight years old, the same age Jimmy was when he died. But there was something odd about him. He was pasty white and....he was bald!
Jimmy snickered to himself, though his sounds came out like a puppy whine. “Hey, kid! Is that the new buzz? Ha!”
By the time the little boy reached the first floor he was exhausted from the trip down.
“Do you need to rest, Robin?” his mother asked.
Rest? Are you kidding me? He just got here!
“No,” Robin shook his head enthusiastically. “I just have to see, Mommy. Please. Did Santa bring him?” The little boy’s eyes went to the tree, but there were only the Lionel train under the tree and a half dozen wrapped boxes. His shoulders slumped. “Oh,” he said with the sound that reminded Jimmy of his own heart when it broke from loneliness.
I’m sorry little boy.
Robin turned and looked at the mantle.
Daphne Richardson snapped a photograph, which temporarily blinded Robin. “Becky, move away so that Robin can see his stocking.”
“Sorry, sis,” Becky said with a smile.
Robin had a clear view of the fireplace.
In all his previous life Jimmy had never seen the brilliance of joy in a child’s eyes. Certainly he’d never seen it in his own reflection. But as Robin looked at Jimmy hanging over the fireplace in a stocking, Jimmy realized he’d given more to this child in this one moment than the summation of all the thoughtful things he’d done in his past life as Jimmy. In that instant, the doors to Jimmy’s heart were flung open.
He radiated love to the little boy with the bald head.
